Day 2
Arlington to Texarkana Arkansas
Here we go, 1st stop the driver's meeting at UT Arlington. On the way there
David got a text from a cousin that lives in the Metroplex. Oh boy, were we in trouble for not letting him know that we were in town. So sorry, we will try to do better next time!
While at the meeting we overheard someone say that there were 5000 cars present. I'm not sure if that is an accurate number or not but there were A LOT of cars. So, the rule at the driver's meeting is "first car in ... first car out" so you can just imaging with somewhere around 5000 cars it took a while to get out of the parking lot. We finally got to pull out around 9:35. We started noticing license plates on the vehicles around us and saw them from all of the US and even 2 from Canada. At the even yesterday David talked to some guys from Australia. The Power Tour has gotten to be a really big deal.
The tour doesn't take interstate unless there is no other option. So we get to go through a lot of small towns along the way. It is really neat to see people in every town setting along the sides of the road waving and taking pictures. In one town, they were handing out bottles of water to all of us when we stopped at the stop sign. There were a few times that the wait at stop signs and stop lights took quite a while. Some of the cars starting getting hot, it seemed to be taking a long time! We finally decided to have lunch at the Texas stop sign in Winnsboro. They were pretty quick and handled the number of people very well. While we were there we finally got to see some friends we met on a previous Power Tour. Then we went through Pittsburg, this is such a cute little town with several very nice old homes that have been restored.
The afternoon began to deteriorate from there. There was an accident (no one from the Power Tour) that had traffic really backed up, some road construction and some driving instruction that were not very clear. All of this together made us run much later than we wanted. We didn't get to the venue in Texarkana until around 5 PM. We were really ready to get out of the car!!! Things quickly got better as we walked around and got to enjoy the show. We stayed there for a little more than an hour.
We found the hotel with no problems, again it is very nice. Decided to just order in pizza for dinner tonight. We can use some time to just chill.
We decided that we don't need to go to anymore driver's meetings so we can get an earlier start and hopefully not get caught in so many traffic jams.
Hopefully I will get a little more sleep tonight.
We are off to Little Rock in the morning.
Pictures 1, 2 & 3 are at UT Arlington before we left. Picture 4 is part of the line of cars waiting to turn at a stop light in one of the small towns.
